Steve
was born and raised in Portland. At an early age it was clear that he
was an outdoors oriented person. As an
explorer scout he was one of the founding members of Search and
Rescue Post 631. It
was at this time that Steve took the Mazamas basic climbing school and
climbed Mt Hood for the first time, and in a short time got hooked on
climbing. At Portland State University geology proved the the perfect
fit for the climbing life. He had to go climbing to study the rocks
that made up the mountains ...right. These "geological/mountaineering"
trips took him all over the Northwest, as well as south to Yosemite.
Exploration geology in the form of employment soon took him to British
Columbia, the Yukon, and western Alberta where he searched for base
metal mineral deposits. After five years in western Canada an
opportunity to live in Rio de Janeiro Brazil for a year appeared on the
door step. Bags were quickly packed and he moved south to assume the
role of a geological systems analyst developing a data base of Brazilian
mineral occurrences and deposits. The result of this project was one of
the earliest geographical information systems on record as well as a
precursor of dBase. Brazil hooked him and following the completion of
the analyst contract he went back to mineral exploration. Over the next
15 or so years he worked throughout Brazil, as well as conducting
studies in Peru and Mexico. When the collapse of the metals market at
the close of the 80's start of the 90's it became clear that a new
profession was in order. At this point he returned to Portland.
Parleying experience with computers and many years of managing
exploration projects he formalized his project management education. For
the last decade he has focused on Information technology project
management for diverse business sectors. Needless to say he resumed
climbing in the northwest with forays to the Tetons, City of Rock,
Squamish, Canadian Rockies, Ouray, and Cody to name a few of the
areas...... To be continued
